Of all the accomplishments of the ancient Middle East, the invention of the alphabet is probably the greatest. While pre-alphabetic systems of writing in the Old World became steadily more phonetic, they were still exceedingly cumbersome, and the syllabic systems that gradually replaced them… Theories of the origin of the alphabet The evolution of the alphabet involved two important achievements. The first was the step taken by a group of Semitic-speaking people, perhaps the Phoenicians, on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean between and bce. This was the invention of a consonantal writing system known as North Semitic. The second was the invention, by the Greeks, of characters for representing vowels. This step occurred between and bce. While some scholars consider the Semitic writing system an unvocalized syllabary and the Greek system the true alphabet, both are treated here as forms of the alphabet. Over the centuries, various theories have been advanced to explain the origin of alphabetic writing, and, since Classical times, the problem has been a matter of serious study. The Greeks and Romans considered five different peoples as the possible inventors of the alphabet—the Phoenicians, Egyptians, Assyrians, Cretans, and Hebrews.
This is the main reason why alphabet dating was invented. The longevity of the relationship is not a factor, but this kind of dating can greatly benefit those who have been together for a long time. How Is Alphabet Dating Done? There are 26 letters in the English alphabet. Example So when a couple starts, they naturally begin with the letter A.
The Greek alphabet has been used to write the Greek language since the late ninth or early eighth century BC. It is derived from the earlier Phoenician alphabet, and was the first alphabetic script to have distinct letters for vowels as well as consonants. In Archaic and early Classical times, the Greek alphabet existed in many different local variants, but, by the end of the fourth century BC.
It is closely related to the Phoenician script. The find is attributed to the mid th century BCE. Gezer calendar The script of the Gezer calendar , dated to the late 10th century BCE, bears strong resemblance to contemporaneous Phoenician script from inscriptions at Byblos. The 8th-century Hebrew inscriptions exhibit many specific and exclusive traits, leading modern scholars to conclude that already in the 10th century BCE the Paleo-Hebrew script was used by wide scribal circles.
Even though very few 10th-century Hebrew inscriptions have been found, the quantity of the epigraphic material from the 8th century onward shows the gradual spread of literacy among the people of the Kingdom of Israel and the Kingdom of Judah. In a Phoenician inscription in 22 lines was found among the ruins of Sidon. Each line contained about 40 or 50 characters. A facsimile copy of the writing was published in United States Magazine in July The inscription was on the lid of a large stone sarcophagus carved in fine Egyptian style.
Non-Latin alphabets[ edit ] Some abecedaria include obsolete letters which are not otherwise attested in inscriptions. For example, abecedaria in the Etruscan alphabet from Marsiliana the Tuscana town include the letters B, D, and O, which indicate sounds not present in the Etruscan language and are therefore not found in Etruscan inscriptions. Others, such as those known from Safaitic inscriptions, list the letters of the alphabet in different orders, suggesting that the script was casually rather than formally learned.
Some abecedaria found in the Athenian Agora appear to be deliberately incomplete, consisting of only the first three to six letters of the Greek alphabet, and these may have had a magical or ritual significance. The Greek alphabet was growing closer to the Latin alphabet.
The Paleo-Hebrew alphabet (Hebrew: הכתב העברי הקדום ), also spelt Palaeo-Hebrew alphabet, is a variant of the Phoenician alphabet. Like the Phoenician alphabet, the Paleo-Hebrew alphabet contains 22 letters, all of which are consonants, and is described as an term was coined by Solomon Birnbaum in ; he wrote, “To apply the term Phoenician to the script of the.

Melissa 10 comments Often considered one of the more difficult languages to master thanks to the incredible amount of inconsistencies in the language, it should come as no surprise that the development of the modern English alphabet involved several languages, hundreds of years and a variety of conquers, missionaries and scholars. Origins of Alphabetic Writing Dating back nearly four thousand years, early alphabetic writing, as opposed to other early forms of writing like cuneiform which employed the use of different wedge shapes or hieroglyphics which primarily used pictographic symbols , relied on simple lines to represent spoken sounds.
Scholars attribute its origin to a little known Proto-Sinatic , Semitic form of writing developed in Egypt between and BC. Building on this ancient foundation, the first widely used alphabet was developed by the Phoenicians about seven hundred years later. The Greeks built on the Phoenician alphabet by adding vowels sometime around BC. Both were used throughout the Middle Ages, although they were considered a single letter until quite recently.

The first year of marriage, this worked really well and encouraged us to get out, go to new places, and not stop going on dates just because we were married. However, after the first year of marriage, we slowly stopped being as intentional about our date nights. So in order to be more intentional about going on weekly dates, I told Em that we should try alphabet dating.
Alphabet dating is where you do one date a week based on each letter of the alphabet. I heard about this thing that the National Aquarium in Baltimore does where you get to have a sleepover with the sharks — you literally spend the night in the same room as the sharks! But the night made for an even better date night than I had hoped!! When we arrived, we were given dinner and then taken on a behind-the-scenes tour of the aquarium.
Our tour guides Victoria, Maria, and Ed were all amazing! It was really cool because the aquarium was completely closed and we had the whole place to ourselves. We got to see the kitchen where they prep the food for the fish, go on an open catwalk above the shark tank, touch jelly fish, and have our own personal dolphin viewing.
