A Multi-Layered Approach Introduction How pornography should be regulated is one of the most controversial topics to have arisen in relation to the Internet in recent years. What is considered simply sexually explicit but not obscene in England may well be obscene in many other countries; conversely what is considered lawful but not pornographic in Sweden may well be obscene under the current UK legislation. This chapter will discuss two different issues: These issues are different in nature and should not be confused. It is the submission of this paper that any regulatory action intended to protect a certain group of people, such as children, should not take the form of an unconditional prohibition of using the Internet to distribute certain content where that is freely available to adults in other media. The availability of pornographic content on the Internet Pornography on the Internet is available in different formats. These range from pictures and short animated movies, to sound files and stories. The Internet also makes it possible to discuss sex, see live sex acts, and arrange sexual activities 3 from computer screens.

Should acts of hate be criminalized? Should assisted suicide be legalized? Should cell phone use in cars be banned? Should children be given sex education in schools, or should this be the responsibility of the parents? Should continued office for public officials be dependent on successfully taking a drug test?

Given this list, let me ask a trick question. What was the most damaging data breach in the last 12 months? The trick answer is: When the Snowden revelations first came to light, it felt like we might be heading towards an Orwellian dystopia. Now we know that the situation is much worse. If you go back and read Orwell, you’ll notice that Oceania was actually quite good at data security.

Our own Thought Police is a clown car operation with no checks or oversight, no ability to keep the most sensitive information safe, and no one behind the steering wheel. The proximate reasons for the culture of total surveillance are clear. Storage is cheap enough that we can keep everything. Computers are fast enough to examine this information, both in real time and retrospectively.

Our daily activities are mediated with software that can easily be configured to record and report everything it sees upstream. But to fix surveillance, we have to address the underlying reasons that it exists. These are no mystery either. State surveillance is driven by fear.

Overview[ edit ] Many of the challenges associated with Internet censorship are similar to those for offline censorship of more traditional media such as newspapers, magazines, books, music, radio, television, and film. One difference is that national borders are more permeable online: Thus censors must work to prevent access to information even though they lack physical or legal control over the websites themselves. This in turn requires the use of technical censorship methods that are unique to the Internet, such as site blocking and content filtering.

A Time Magazine article quotes computer scientist John Gilmore , one of the founders of the Electronic Frontier Foundation , as saying “The Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it.

Internet censorship is the control or suppression of what can be accessed, published, or viewed on the Internet enacted by regulators, or on their own initiative. Individuals and organizations may engage in self-censorship for moral, religious, or business reasons, to conform to societal norms, due to intimidation, or out of fear of legal or other consequences.

In the utopian world coded by tech entrepreneurs, people would navigate the information flow and engage in quality conversations online. But that now seems idealistic and a little naive. Andrew McLaughlin, former director of public policy at Google, said the best metaphor for the current state of the internet is the so-called Tragedy of the Commons.

Ev Williams, who cofounded Twitter and founded Medium, has always believed that if we could speak freely, the world would be a better place. But lately, he’s realized it’s not quite so simple. Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince described the nuance when he made the decision to kick neo-Nazi site The Daily Stormer off his platform, which helps protect websites from online attacks. He put it flippantly in a memo to employees: He worries about that power, and so should you.

It was founded by divisive radio host and conservative commentator Dennis Prager and produces online videos for YouTube — the segments tend to promote conservative ideology.

Niki Adams from the English Collective of Prostitutes opposes a ban Calls for “prostitution websites” to be banned in England and Wales will be made at a House of Commons debate. A cross-party group of MPs says the owners of such sites “directly and knowingly” profit from sex-trafficking and wants the Home Office to intervene. The group adds that a small number of sites “dominate the marketplace” and have named two in particular: But sex-worker-rights campaigners say the proposal would be “a disaster”.

Three organisations – the Sex Worker Advocacy and Resistance Movement Swarm , the English Collective of Prostitutes ECP , and the xTalk collective – are planning a demonstration outside Parliament at the time of this Wednesday’s debate to protest against the suggested law change.

What to include in your problem-solution speech or essay? Problem-solution papers employ a nonfiction text structure, and typically contain the following elements: Introduce the problem and explain why the audience should be concerned about it. Inform the audience on what causes the problem. In some cases, you may also need to take time to dispel common misconceptions people have about the real cause.

The thesis typically lays out the problem and solution in the form of a question and answer. Explain the solution clearly and in detail, your problem-solving strategy, and reasons why your solution will work. Summarize the problem and solution, and paint a picture of what will happen if your final solution is adopted. Also, let the reader know what steps they should take to help solve the problem. These are the most used methods of developing and arranging: Problem Solution Method Recommended if you have to argue that there is a social and current issue at stake and you have convince the listeners that you have the best solution.

We argue that we’re likely to succeed on the merits of our libel claim, and that failure to enjoin the speech would cause us irreparable harm. Too bad, the court will certainly say; a content-based preliminary injunction of speech would be a blatantly unconstitutional prior restraint. Maybe after a trial on the merits and a judicial finding that the speech is in fact constitutionally unprotected libel, we could get a permanent injunction, though even that’s not clear.

It seems the new “Unmasking Antifa Act” has ruffled a few feathers among the alt-left. Introduced in the House last month by Rep Dan Donovan (R-NY), H.R. is a response to a spate of violent attacks provoked by masked members of Antifa, and would punish anyone wearing a mask who “injures, oppresses, threatens or intimidates” a person “in the free exercise or enjoyment of any.

Follow Us Advantages and Disadvantages of the Internet You Must Be Aware Of Internet has been perhaps the most outstanding innovation in the field of communication in the history of mankind. As with every single innovation, internet has its own advantages and disadvantages. Nonetheless, the greater magnitude of its advantages outweighs its disadvantages. Advertisement The Internet A global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities, consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols.

Because of our continuous quest for more amenities and better standard of living, we have been able to invent and discover many new things. The nineties witnessed a major revolution with the invention of the first electronic digital computers. Till then, the term Internet was practically unknown to most people. However, today, the Internet has become the most powerful tool for people around the world.

This is the text of my keynote speech at the 34th Chaos Communication Congress in Leipzig, December You can also watch it on YouTube, but it runs to about 45 minutes. As a working science fiction novelist, I take a professional interest in how we get predictions about the future wrong, and why, so that I can avoid repeating the same mistakes. Science fiction is written by people embedded within a society with expectations and political assumptions that bias us towards looking at the shiny surface of new technologies rather than asking how human beings will use them, and to taking narratives of progress at face value rather than asking what hidden agenda they serve.

In this talk, author Charles Stross will give a rambling, discursive, and angry tour of what went wrong with the 21st century, why we didn’t see it coming, where we can expect it to go next, and a few suggestions for what to do about it if we don’t like it. I’m Charlie Stross, and it’s my job to tell lies for money.

The essential tech news of the moment. Technology’s news site of record. Not for dummies.

Since its launch in , the neo-Nazi website The Daily Stormer has quickly become the go-to spot for racists on the internet. Women are whores, blacks are inferior and a shadowy Jewish cabal is organizing a genocide against white people. The site can count among its readers Dylann Roof, the white teenager who slaughtered nine African Americans in Charleston in , and James Jackson, who fatally stabbed an elderly black man with a sword in the streets of New York earlier this year.

Traffic is up lately, too, at white supremacist sites like The Right Stuff, Iron March, American Renaissance and Stormfront, one of the oldest white nationalist sites on the internet. The operations of such extreme sites are made possible, in part, by an otherwise very mainstream internet company — Cloudflare. Cloudflare has said it is not in the business of censoring websites and will not deny its services to even the most offensive purveyors of hate. It turns over to the hate sites the personal information of people who criticize their content.

For instance, when a reader figures out that Cloudflare is the internet company serving sites like The Daily Stormer, they sometimes write to the company to protest. Cloudflare, per its policy, then relays the name and email address of the person complaining to the hate site, often to the surprise and regret of those complaining. This has led to campaigns of harassment against those writing in to protest the offensive material. People have been threatened and harassed.

All but three declined to talk on the record, citing fear of further harassment or a desire to not relive it. Andrew Anglin, the owner of The Daily Stormer, has been candid about how he feels about people reporting his site for its content.

I only visited Oregon with a car once and the guy definitely filled far above the fill-no-more level. Fined by the city for claiming to be an engineer – Suing on grounds of free speech 28 Apr 17 I felt I needed to “hold my horses” when I realized that the board to their credit has given a first warning. I guess a “smart” engineer who is genuinely concerned by public safety would have heard the message their was a traffic signaling light saying “be careful” and corrected their attitude accordingly – I’d say as bare minimum – in order not to jeopardize by himself the process and the claim at once.

Since Homer at least, these terms had a wide range of application, extending from practical know-how and prudence in public affairs to poetic ability and theoretical knowledge. Notably, the term sophia could be used to describe disingenuous cleverness long before the rise of the sophistic movement. Theognis, for example, writing in the sixth century B.

In the fifth century B. The Clouds depicts the tribulations of Strepsiades, an elderly Athenian citizen with significant debts. Deciding that the best way to discharge his debts is to defeat his creditors in court, he attends The Thinkery, an institute of higher education headed up by the sophist Socrates.

When he fails to learn the art of speaking in The Thinkery, Strepsiades persuades his initially reluctant son, Pheidippides, to accompany him.

The protestors did not frame their anger and inflammatory rhetoric in this way, though. But more than that: The spitting rage behind those words — the desire to follow through with a punch — is too often present. I have always known these words are used against me as an explicit reminder: No matter how confident, tough, self-assured, strong, or brave a woman is, these words still put her in her place.

An argumentative speech is a persuasive speech in which the speaker attempts to persuade his audience to alter their viewpoints on a controversial issue. While a persuasive speech may be aimed more at sharing a viewpoint and asking the audience to consider it, an argumentative speech aims to radically change the opinions already held by the audience.

Email Gay activists often criticize media coverage of gay pride parades, saying, correctly, that the media focus on the extreme, the more flamboyantly feminine men and very masculine women. But that’s not us, they say. Most of us are just like everyone else. Are gays just like straights? Or is Hollywood’s frequent portrayal of gay men as feminine more accurate?

We talked to Carson Kressley and Ted Allen, two of the stars of the hit television show “Queer Eye” about the stereotypes. What, we asked, are the stereotypes about gay men? But, says Allen, the stereotypes are not always true. Not all straight men are bad dressers,” he said. There is research that suggests gay men do prefer certain professions, like fashion, interior design and hair coloring, and that lesbians are more likely to prefer sports and the military.

Researchers say it’s because lesbians, on average, are attracted to more masculine occupations, and gay men tend to prefer more feminine occupations. But it is true that hostility toward gay people drove many away from some other professions. Rosie O’Donnell and Ellen DeGeneres are high-profile lesbians working in comedy and daytime television.

Freedom of Speech and Injunctions in Intellectual Property Cases

Members of Westboro Baptist Church pictured in have been specifically banned from entering Canada for hate speech. Justifications for limitations to freedom of speech often reference the ” harm principle ” or the “offense principle”. Limitations to freedom of speech may occur through legal sanction or social disapprobation, or both. However, Mill also introduced what is known as the harm principle, in placing the following limitation on free expression: Feinberg wrote “It is always a good reason in support of a proposed criminal prohibition that it would probably be an effective way of preventing serious offense as opposed to injury or harm to persons other than the actor, and that it is probably a necessary means to that end.

But, as offending someone is less serious than harming someone, the penalties imposed should be higher for causing harm.

Multi-party period of Turkey Regional censorship predates the establishment of the Republic of Turkey. On 15 February , the Ottoman Empire issued law governing printing houses “Basmahane Nizamnamesi” ; books first had to be shown to the governor, who forwarded them to commission for education “Maarif Meclisi” and the police.

If no objection was made, the Sultanate would then inspect them. Without censure from the Sultan books could not be legally issued. The Press Law changed, sentences and fines were increased. It was given the power to confiscate publications, close papers and printing houses. Anyone not following the decisions of the commission were subject to imprisonment, between one and three years. During the s and s, broaching the topics of secularism , minority rights in particular the Kurdish issue , and the role of the military in politics risked reprisal.

For example, publisher Fatih Tas was prosecuted in under Article 8 at Istanbul State Security Court for translating and publishing writings by Noam Chomsky , summarizing the history of human rights violations in southeast Turkey ; he was acquitted, however, in February Those who resist do so at their own risk. All of these have tended to steer clear of covering the demonstrations.

Bianet recorded the censorship of websites, 40 Twitter accounts, news; attacks against 21 journalists, three media organs, and one printing house; civil pursuits against 28 journalists; and the six-fold increase of arrests of media representatives, with 24 journalists and 9 distributors imprisoned. The European Court of Human Rights condemned Turkey for violation of the freedom of expression in the Abdurrahman Dilipak case Sledgehammer investigation , [39] [40] and the Turkish Constitutional Court upheld the violation of the freedom of expression of five persons, including a journalist.

The Supreme Electoral Council ordered 65 channels twice to stop broadcasting the results of the June election before the end of the publishing ban.
