Turbocharger Compressor Calculations

Another approach I am considering as a DIY is this: Construct a simple adapter with a nipple to mate to the turbo exhaust output flange. Unbolt the downpipe and hook up the adapter. Take a piece of clear tubing and hook one end to the nipple on the adapter. Form the rest of the tubing into a “U” shape and feed the free end of the “U” tubing up so that its open end is above the level of the exhaust manifold, and secure it temporarily in that position. Get some of this stuff – “Piston Kleen” 4. Using a funnel, gently pour the Piston Kleen down the open end of the clear tubing. Watching the fluid in the tube carefully, make sure that the level in the clear tube does not fill up enough to reach over the bottom edge of the exhaust manifold – you don’t want the fluid going above the top level of the turbo and through the manifold into your head.

The car owner should study the manual carefully, and try to consult with experts or experienced people before making any major changes. However, this also means that the car will be larger or heavier. Turbochargers are used in many race cars, when every fraction of a pound counts, but can also be added to almost any vehicle to extend its performance. Internal combustion engines work by using the air pressure created by a piston as it does an intake stroke.

This action pushes the air and fuel into the cylinders.

Jun 19,  · If you are going to be running 40psi or less, you don’t need the wastegate. Just put a plug in the compressor housing of the turbo. Upwards of 40psi, with the excpetion of twin turbos, a wategate is needed to prevent excessive turbo speed.

For many people the word “turbo” has become synonymous with speed and power. It does not matter what someone is talking about; as soon as someone uses that word, everyone thinks performance, and cars are no different. For many makes and models, the turbocharged version has by far the best power to weight ratio available. But what of the cars that do not come equipped with a turbocharger?

It is possible to pull the engine and replace it with a turbocharged one, but that can be both time-consuming and expensive. The other option is to simply add a turbo to the existing engine. It does take time and some specialized knowledge, but it is one of the best ways to increase the power of any car. How a Turbo Works A turbo, originally called a “turbosupercharger” and shortened to turbocharger, works by actively pumping air through the engine’s intake valves rather than relying on the vacuum created by the piston’s intake stroke.

John Estill Introduction The purpose of this little paper is to show the reader how to calculate the volume and mass of air moving through his engine, and how to size a turbochargers’ compressor to move that quantity of air. It should also offer some enlightenment of the effects of temperature, pressure, and intercooling on the engine’s performance. Engine Volumetric Flow Equation This equation is for finding the volume of air going into the engine.

BTW, one thing you could do to improve your odds is purchase that manual and next time you could give it to the shop techs so they’ll have the necessary info straight from the horse’s mouth. I can’t disagree with your comment that the oil and oil filter should be replaced when changing out a turbo, and the old oil should be sieved for.

When placing your water injection nozzle make sure you do not place the nozzle upstream of a MAF or mass air flow sensor. Fluid running through this sensor can damage these sensors in some particular engines. Next, we recommend not installing these pre-intercooler unless you are injecting pre-blower on a supercharged engine that has an intake mounted intercooler. Injecting before front mount intercooler can cause the water-alcohol mixture to collect at the bottom, because of the restriction of the tubes.

Okay, now we know where not to place the nozzle, lets get on to where to place it. Starting from where the air enters the intake tract and ending at the intake just prior to the combustion chamber. Pre-Turbo water We don’t recommend this location at all, if you do not have the proper equipment, such as, the proper nozzle, nozzle size and high pressure pump.

Locating the nozzle here is the most controversial location. This sounds great but, the main issue with pre-turbo nozzle placement is what mixture can damage the compressor blade if the mixture is not properly atomized when passing through the turbo. We recommend you mount the nozzle as close to the compresser as possible. Pre-Intercooler Pre-intercooler seems like a sensible nozzle location but, the thing to remember about this is: We don’t recommend this location either.

The other problem is that there’s a possibility that the hot air from the turbo might unnecessarily vaporize the water and take up some of the volume built up by the turbo that was supposed to be for the charge.

Contact Us We understand that finding the right turbocharger can be a very daunting task, especially if you have not had years of experience working with these mean machines before. In order to narrow down the answer you will need to ask yourself a few questions: Firstly, what is it that you are aiming to achieve? Is the turbocharger you are seeking going to be used for a Motorsport application? Or are you aiming to increase everyday road performance and engine power?

Or is it a drag racing car you plan on launching down Santapod’s raceway?

Summary. By now I’m sure you realize the importance of a good, and efficient intercooler. But hopefully this article also gave you some idea’s on how to improve your current intercooler set-up.

P Y R O M E T E R S A pyrometer is an exhaust temperature gauge that allows you to read an immediate change in exhaust temperature by receiving a temperature signal from a probe thermocouple that is inserted into the exhaust manifold. This constant monitoring of temperature changes alerts the driver to temperature problems well before indications would be received from a typical water temperature gauge.

Equipment operators use pyrometers to diagnose engine problems and drive more efficiently, prolonging engine life and reducing fuel consumption. It takes energy from heat and converts it into motion to transport goods. Excessive temperature is the greatest damaging factor to an engine. By monitoring the temperature of the exhaust, you can detect changes in temperature which may be the early signs of trouble. A pyrometer will indicate engine problems more efficiently than any other method.

Lets examine how a pyrometer will help you. The horsepower developed by the diesel engine depends on the amount of fuel being burned efficiently. Fuel and air must be delivered to the combustion chamber in the right quantity. It takes about 2, gallons of air for every gallon of fuel. Higher exhaust temperatures are the result of these basic causes:

Jan 30,  · In this video, we show you how to put oil supply and return lines on any turbocharger. The process is the same on almost any vehicle. This should answer quite a few questions that i received in.

Contact Author Forced induction is a term car guys throw around: How you go about doing this is actually pretty complicated, but the concept behind it is not. You want cooler, denser air to flow into your engine so that you can produce more power per unit of fuel. This compression of air flowing into your intake is referred to as boost.

There are many ways to go about converting your naturally aspirated engine into a forced-induction engine, or alterng the airflows in an already boosted power plant. I would like to focus on just one of these forced-induction processes right now: There’s a Difference Not every turbocharger system that utilizes two compressors is a twin turbocharger system.

Take for example the lowly Ford 2. Heavy cast iron block topped with a simple 2 valve cast iron cylinder head. This engine is far from high tech – especially by today’s standards! Yet, this simple and crude engine design has been known to produce some impressive power outputs.

Couple things i suggest if you replace the oil inlet line get a cheap sauce bottle and fill the oil like with fresh oil, do a oil change before starting, and make sure you put oil in the turbo before you hook it up.

By Andrew Wolf February 26, There was a time many moons ago when turbocharging and centrifugal supercharging were forms of power-producing technology reserved largely for industrial equipment, big rigs, and high-end sports car and open wheel racing machines. But over time, the trickle down effect has delivered that very same technology to the masses. Now, armed with some fabrication skills and a little know-how, an enthusiast can affordably install a turbo or blower kit in their garage.

Staggs has also worked with us to provide a pseudo guide and examples to sizing, based on these same two factors. Shown here is Turbosmart’s Race Port blowoff valve, which is the most commonly used unit for drag racing applications and high horsepower street cars. How They Work Picture how a turbocharger system works here, as our first example. The turbine side is driven by the exhaust gases from the engine, spinning the compressor side, sending a charge of compressed air to the engine.

The distance this air discharge travels can vary.

Each turbocharger is driven by half of the engine’s spent exhaust energy. In most applications, the compressed air from both turbos is combined in a common intake manifold and sent to the individual cylinders. Parallel twin turbos applied to V-shaped engines are usually mounted with one turbo assigned to each cylinder bank, providing packaging symmetry and simplifying plumbing over a single turbo setup.

When used on inline engines, parallel twin turbos are commonly applied with two smaller turbos, which can provide similar performance with less turbo lag than a single larger turbo. The Maserati Biturbo , introduced in and featuring an aluminium degree SOHC V6, was the first production car with a twin-turbo charged engine. While a parallel twin-turbo set-up theoretically has less turbo lag than a single turbocharger set up, this is not always the case due to many factors.

Some ways to counter this are to use a light pressure set up with smaller turbos, where the turbos are designed to output less boost but spool earlier. While this setup sacrifices some top end power, it still has less lag than a similar engine with a single turbo set up making the same power. Another system would be the use of variable geometry turbochargers.

FAQ Will a supercharger shorten the life of my engine or drivetrain? That is a very subjective question, as the manner in which an automobile is driven directly affects engine life. Assuming a properly tuned system, proper oil change and engine maintenance, and similar driving, supercharging generally will not shorten the life of an engine, just as is the case with OEM turbocharging with proper cooldown for turbochargers.

A cooldown period after driving is not necessary with supercharging. This is especially true of centrifugal supercharging, which generates boost in line with engine rpm, unlike roots and twin screw blowers, whose low rpm boost can place additional strain on the engine and drive train. Superchargers can be used with automatic or manual transmissions and will not increase transmission wear under normal driving. When racing, however, the additional torque provided by supercharging will place additional load on the transmission, especially when increased traction is present, such as with slicks.

This impact is minimized when the boost increases with engine rpm, as is the case with centrifugal supercharging and turbocharging. How long does it take to install a ProCharger system? Most ProCharger systems can be installed in hours with simple hand tools.
